Donald Lee Boyington, the son of Leland Jay and Eva (Johnson) Boyington, was born October 17, 1931 at Clarion, Iowa. At the age of ten, following the death of his father, Don moved with his mother to Humboldt. To help support the family, Don went to work in the Coke Plant in Humboldt at the age of 13. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Korea where he served as the gunner on a half-track and attained the rank of Corporal. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home. He married LaVon Schnieder on March 5, 1960 and the couple made their home in Dakota City where they had their three children.
Don worked as a forklift operator for Concrete Products for many years until his retirement at the age of 62. He loved to watch television, often having several on at the same time. He enjoyed attending auctions, photography, bicycling, and coffee with Bob Taylor at Hardee’s and Ampride. He especially loved spending time with his children, often taking them horseback riding, roller skating, and to drive-in movies.
