Arthur Keith Berkhimer

Arthur Keith Berkhimer, 94, of Humboldt, passed away on Sunday morning, August 11, 2024 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.

Keith was born May 5, 1930 in Humboldt, the son of Reginald and Roberta Blanche (Erickson) Berkhimer. He grew up in the Humboldt area and graduated from Rutland High School. Keith received a scholarship to attend Bausch & Lomb College which he turned down in order to enlist in the United States Army. He served during the Second World War and was stationed in Guam until his discharge in 1947. He then made his home in California, where he met Dolores Gearhart and they were married in 1958. Keith worked for the State of California, Caltrans, as a Structural Steel Inspector and one of the highlights of his career was the inspection of new road bed placements in the mid 1980’s for the Golden Gate Bridge. Following Dolores’s passing in 1998, Keith continued to make his home in Grass Valley, California until he connected with his high school sweetheart, Betty Hood and then deciding to return to Humboldt in 2004. The couple enjoyed traveling in their later years. Keith was an accomplished Chess player, enjoyed creating welding art, his model trains, was an avid reader, a fan of the Opera, Carman and whose favorite dish was beef stroganoff.

Keith is survived by his daughters, Sondra Sterling of Warrenton, Missouri and Erica (Jan) Muhler of Grass Valley, California, his grandchildren; Jamie (Jerad) Kern, Jackie (Chad) Bonstell and Robert (Rachel) Sterling, eight great-grandchildren, his brother, John Berkhimer of Humboldt, his step-daughter’s, Elaine Hood and Linda Mixdorf, his step-granddaughter, Katie Hood and his niece, Beth Berkhimer Sullivan. Keith was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dolores, nephew, Mike Berkhimer and companion, Betty Hood.
