Betty Jane Barker Pannell, age 87, passed away Friday, May 4, 2012 at her home.  Graveside funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at Union Cemetery, Humboldt.  The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.

Betty was born in Granite City, Illinois to the late Loomis Culver Barker and Marie Antoinette Strunge Barker on July 1, 1924.  Betty grew up in Alton, Illinois and graduated from Alton High School.  She attended Urseline Academy and Shurtleff College.  Betty was very involved with the Women’s Association of John Knox Presbyterian Church in Florissant, Missouri for many years, holding several offices.  She worked to help establish Woodland Manor, a Girls Home, in St. Louis County, Missouri.  She was involved in the girls’ counseling, etc., at the Manor. Appointed as a juvenile officer, she worked with the Florissant, Missouri Police Department as a court observer.  She was a very active PTA participant and helped St. Louis Christian College students from other countries adjust to the USA.  She enjoyed various crafts but her hobby of passion was reading, often having more than one book being read at a time.  She was a member of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, of 56 years, William Harold Pannell, Jr. of Bristol, Virginia; son, Richard Eugene Pannell and his wife Elizabeth Lynn Ryals Pannell of Bristol, Virginia; and grandchildren, William Andrew Pannell and Michaela Marie Pannell both of Bristol, Virginia.  She is preceded in death by her sister, Melinda Lou Barker Chew; and brother, Dick Culver Barker.
