Carrie M. Buchan, 100, of Custer, SD, formerly of Humboldt, passed away November 15, 2008 at Custer. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2008 in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt.
Mrs. Buchan is survived by her son, Larry (Sally) Buchan of Custer, SD; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Buchan; brothers, Stanley and Lawrence Madsen; and many nieces and nephews.
Carrie Marie Madsen, the daughter of Mike and Sine Elizabeth (Andersen) Madsen, was born July 23, 1908 near Bradgate, Iowa. She was baptized in the St. Olaf Lutheran Church at Bode and received her education in rural schools near Arnold and Bode. She was united in marriage to John Buchan on December 9, 1933 at Fairmont, MN. In 1937, they made their home at Humboldt where Carrie worked for the DeKalb Seed Corn Company, the Humboldt Reminder, and helped with housework for area families. In 1992, they made their home at Custer, SD. Mr. Buchan passed away in 1997 and Carrie continued to maintain her home at Custer.
Carrie was a member of the Lutheran Church. She enjoyed painting, traveling with John, and baking. In July of this year she celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends.
