Conrad M. Johnson, 86, of Ottosen, passed away April 8, 2014 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode with the Rev. Steve Bliss officiating. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, Bode with full military rites by the Ottosen American Legion and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the church. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is entrusted with the arrangements.
Conrad Martin Johnson was born at Thor, Iowa on October 12, 1927 to James and Marie (Torgerson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Ullensvang Lutheran Church at Thor. He attended grade school at Thor, and moved with his parents to Omaha when he was in high school, graduating in 1945. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and was stationed on the aircraft carrier, “Wasp”, as well as spending several months on the island of Okinawa in the South Pacific. After his discharge from the Navy, he was in carpentry work with his brother-in-law in the Fort Dodge area.
In August of 1953, Conrad was united in marriage to Phyllis Larson at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode, Iowa. They farmed in the Bode and Ottosen area until they retired, she from teaching school and he from farming. They maintained their home on the farm and enjoyed traveling, yard work, gardening, and their neighborhood card club. Conrad especially enjoyed joining other veterans on the Honor Flight to Washington in 2010.
Conrad was a member of the Ottosen American Legion, Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240, the Ottosen and Bode Community Clubs, and the St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he held various offices.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Phyllis; two sons, Dan and his wife, Roxann of rural Ottosen, and Scott and his wife, Kim of Richmond, TX; three grandchildren, Brittany Johnson and fiancée, Erik Halsrud of Buckeye, AZ, and Tyler and Emma Johnson of Richmond, TX. He is also survived by his brother, James L. Johnson of Fort Dodge, sisters-in-law, Ruth Jacobson of Humboldt, and Marilyn Larson of Iowa City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Joyce Knudsen, Donna Anderson, and Ruth Cahoon; brothers-in-law, Victor Knudsen, Selmar Anderson, Delbert Cahoon, Ralph Jacobson, and John Larson; sister-in-law, Gwen Johnson; and niece, Connie Dinius and her husband, Richard.
