Dale Howard Kunert

d. January 28, 2011

Dale Howard Kunert, 83 of Humboldt passed away January 28, 2011 at the Long Term Care Unit of Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.  Funeral Services will be Tuesday February 1 at 10:30 AM at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Reverend J. K. Raether and Reverend Aaron Flatau officiating. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Monday from 5 to 8 PM at the funeral home.

Dale Howard Kunert the son of Arthur and Martha (Keuhnast) Kunert was born August 9, 1927 in Beaver Township Humboldt County. At age 1 he moved with his parents to Grove Township. He attended Dakota City schools for 10 years and in 1945 graduated from Humboldt High School.  He farmed with his parents until being drafted into the US Army in March 1946.  He was stationed in the Philippines and as a guard at a POW camp.  He received an Honorable Military Police Discharge in March 1947 with the rank of Corporal.  Upon returning home, he resumed his grain and livestock farming. On October 29, 1950 he was united in marriage to Darlene Larsen in Humboldt.  They made their home on the farm on which Dale lived for over 81 years of his life.

Dale was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and served as president when the first unit of the present church was constructed.  He was a boy’s 4-H leader and held offices on the Farmer’s Co-op Elevator board and the Humboldt Community School Board. He was a past member of the Humboldt County Cattlemen’s Association.  Dale loved tilling the soil, tending livestock, and roaming the pastures with “Buddy” his dog by his side.   He enjoyed cattle auctions, reading a history or sports book, and was a loyal Cyclone fan. When declining health prevented doing these activities, he listened to RFD TV and tapes.  He looked forward to visits from friends who kept him informed of events.  Dale retired in 1984 but continued to be semi-active on the farm.  He entered the North Care Center in 2009, and transferred to Long Term Care at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital December 2009.
Dale is survived by his wife Darlene, children Douglas (Linda) Kunert of Johnston, William Kunert of Creston, and Steve (Sherry) Kunert of Humboldt; grandchildren Matthew Kunert, Mitchell (Kristen) Kunert, Michael Kunert, and Joseph Kunert; step-grandchildren Cassandra Wright, Sarah Wright, Rachel Broich, Joseph Broich, and Marissa Broich; great grandchildren Annabelle and Hayden Kunert; sister Lois Gunderson, brother-in-law Eugene Larsen, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Janice and Jerry Paulson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Donald Gunderson.
