Darlene Mae Kunert of rural Humboldt died May 14, 2019 at North Iowa Hospice in Mason City. She was 88 years old. She was born April 14, 1931 in Ottosen, Iowa, the second child of Magnus and Helen (Pedersen) Larsen. She was born in the farm house of her grandparents, Willis and Laura Pedersen.
Darlene was baptized and confirmed at the Rutland Trinity Lutheran Church. She attended Bradgate Community School and graduated in 1948. After graduation, she was employed at Northwestern Bell in Humboldt. While working at Northwestern Bell, she met and fell in love with Dale Kunert. They were married in October 29, 1950 at Humboldt Trinity Danish Church, with Pastor Wesley Andersen officiating. Together with Dale, they began a career of farming east of Humboldt. They had 3 children: Douglas, William and Steven.
Darlene was a devoted wife and parent. She was a full-time homemaker, excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed keeping a spotless home and was well read. She enjoyed reading biographies of public figures. She was a loving and tireless caregiver for Dale when he was severely injured in a farm accident in 1981. Faith was important to Darlene and she relied on her faith to carry her through the tough times.
Darlene is survived by her three children: Douglas (Linda) Kunert of Johnston, William Kunert of Creston and Steven (Sherry) Kunert of Humboldt, her grandchildren: Matthew Kunert, Mitchell (Ben Easter) Kunert, Michael Kunert, Rachel (John) Parenza, Joseph Broich, Marrisa Broich, Cassandra (Bryan) Ott, Sarah (Nathan) George, Joseph Kunert and great grandchildren Freyja Ott, Zinnia Ott, Annabelle Kunert, and Hayden Kunert; her sister, Janiece Paulson of Gilmore City and sister-in-law Lois Gunderson of Austin, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dale, her brother Eugene (Bud) Larsen, brothers-in-law Jerry Paulson and Donald Gunderson.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 19th at 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Burial will be at Indian Mound Cemetery in Humboldt.
