Delores M. "Dee" Johnson

May 6, 1924 — October 17, 2021

Delores “Dee” May (Carlson) Johnson

Dee passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2021, at the North Care Center in Humboldt, IA, where she had been since April of this year.

She was born May 6, 1924, at home, to Clarence and Lena (Zeman) Carlson in Grant Township, Pocahontas County. Dee grew up on a farm near Pocahontas. She was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Pocahontas. She attended country school in Grant Center Township and High School at Pocahontas Public High School. After high school she worked as a Telephone Operator and at grocery store in Pocahontas until she and Archie were married February 9, 1944, at Elfsborg Lutheran church in Pomeroy. Soon after they were married, Archie joined the Navy during WW 2. She lived at her parents almost two years, during which she made three train trips to California, where Archie was stationed, one for six months while his ship, the Allen M. Sumner DD 692 Destroyer, was drydocked after being hit by a Japanese suicide plane. She worked in a Woolworth’s Variety store in the lingerie department, and often talked about how busy she would be when they had silk nylons for sale. (There was a shortage of silk because it was used for parachutes and powder bags for naval guns during the war.) When Archie returned, they farmed in Pomeroy, the Pocahontas area and south of Bode in 1960 until 1986, when Archie retired from farming. She helped Archie with farming and worked at the Bode General Store for 13 years. Dee was a member at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode, was a Sunday School teacher and held the Ladies Aid treasure’s job for several years, Bode Legion Auxiliary and Neighborhood Club. She loved meeting with the group that went on trail rides together years ago. Her greatest joy was to be with family and attend games and events of the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren and was their number one fan!

She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Johnson (1992); parents; Lena Carlson (1970) and Clarence Carlson (1980); brother Eugene Carlson (1981); granddaughter Stacey Dee Clark (1974); daughter Jan Clark (1998); son-in-law Pete Pederson (1989) and son-in-law Bob Reynolds (2002).

She is survived by daughters Jeanne Reynolds, Urbandale, and Judy Jacobson (Tom), Ottosen; nine grandchildren: Scott Pederson (Jen), Johnston, Stephanie Pederson, Urbandale; Dan Clark (Kristin), Des Moines; Derrik Clark (Kristi), Humboldt; Dallas Clark (Karen), Livermore; Nicole Lampe (Ben) Newton; Jacob Jacobson, Portland, Oregon; Isaiah Jacobson, Omaha, Nebraska and Katie Pullen (Drew), Elkhorn, Nebraska; sixteen great-grandchildren, Chelsea Pederson, Waukee; Cole Pederson (Samantha), Ankeny; Brandon Joshua, Des Moines; Nick Fine, Grimes; Drew, Paetyn and Jace Clark, Des Moines; Devon, Ashlyn, and Kendall Clark, Humboldt; Dane, Camden and Hazel Clark, Livermore; Nathan, Macy and Joshua Lampe, Newton; Claire and Dawson Pullen, Elkhorn, Nebraska; and Emerie Jacobson, Portland, Oregon; and one great-great-granddaughter, Presley Pederson, Ankeny; and sister, Gene Sandy, Waukee, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, October 21st, and visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20th both at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode. Burial will be in St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery. www.masonlindhart.com
