Doris M. Callahan, 99, of Humboldt, passed away May 28, 2014 at the Humboldt Care Center South. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Father James Tigges, will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10:45 Monday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt with a parish rosary at 9:30.
Doris Maud Berkhimer, the daughter of Nathan and Molly (Chamberlin) Berkhimer, was born January 29, 1915 at Humboldt, Iowa. She was raised and educated at Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1933 where she received her normal training. In the fall of 1933, at a salary of $10 dollars a week, Doris began teaching at Lake Township Country School. On November 23, 1934, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Maurice F. Callahan. The couple made their home in Humboldt where they began their family. Doris taught until 1946 and in 1949, they began building the home in Humboldt where they would spend their married lives. In addition to raising her children and maintaining her home, Doris stayed active with volunteer work for the American Heart Association and for the Humboldt County Nurse. Mr. Callahan passed away in 2003 and Doris continued to maintain her home until becoming a resident of the Humboldt Care Center South in 2007.
Doris was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, DAR, and was a past 4-H Leader. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and for 27 years, didn’t miss an Iowa State Football Home Game with Maurice. Above all, Doris loved the time spent with her family.
Doris sis survived by her children, David (Sharon) Callahan of Dallas, TX, Margaret (John) Ruble of Eldora, Dorie (Roger) Joanning of Norwalk, and John (Renea) Callahan of Humboldt; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice Callahan; and sisters, Maxine Dwyer and Genevieve Miller.
