Elizabeth “Betty” Van Gronigen, 82, of Dakota City, passed away March 27, 2011 at the Humboldt Care Center South. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday March 29, 2011 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt with the Rev. Lynda Bigler officiating. Interment will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt with a V.F.W. Auxiliary Memorial Service at 5:30 p.m.
Elizabeth Fern Lanning, the daughter of Harry Ray and Blanche Valentine (Naugle) Lanning was born April 23, 1928 at Rutland, Iowa. Following her education, Betty was employed in Clayton’s Department Store. She met Gordon Van Gronigen while he was on leave from the Navy during World War II and on December 8, 1946, the couple was united in marriage at the Methodist Church in Humboldt. They made their home with Gordon’s parents in Dakota City for seven years until purchasing the home they have remained in the rest of their married lives. After her children had grown, Betty went to work in Cody’s Grocery then for Hy-Vee where she remained for 21 years until her retirement.
Betty was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ where she served as a past Deacon, participated in sing alongs, and was active in the Women’s Fellowship. She remained active volunteering outside of church with Meals on Wheels and the food bank. Betty loved to cook, bake, and garden. She enjoyed traveling with Gordon to his ship reunions and to see her grandchildren.
Memorials will be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ.
Betty is survived by her husband, Gordon of Dakota City; children, Judy (John) Tate of Flower Mound, TX, Kristy (Dutch) Moore of Battle Creek, MI, Debbie (Dave) Fisser of Highland Village, TX, and Rick Van Gronigen of Granite Falls, MN; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; brother, Dixon (Carolyn) Lanning of Trenton, MO; and special cousins, Phyllis Link of Swea City and Bill Geis of Fairmont, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; twin brother, Evenor; and brothers, Everett, Leslie, and Robert Lanning.
