Elnora M. Cunningham, 89, of Humboldt, passed away January 10, 2011 at Longmont United Hospital in Longmont, Colorado. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt with the Rev. Lynda Bigler officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation with the family will be from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Elnora Maxine Cunningham was born in rural Ottawa, Kansas on March 6, 1921, the firstborn of John Clarence Olson and Grace (Ames) Olson. She attended a one-room school in Kansas and graduated from the 8th grade there. She then attended a rural high school near Pomona, Kansas when her family moved there. She graduated from high school in Sac City, Iowa in 1940 following a family move from Kansas to Iowa.
After graduating from high school, she was employed in various office jobs until moving to Humboldt in 1945 where she was employed in the Farm Bureau office. She met Miles Cunningham in Humboldt and was united to him in marriage on August 24, 1947 at the Congregational United Church of Christ.
Miles and Elnora lived their entire married life in Humboldt. Elnora was employed in various offices in Humboldt until she became the Deputy Clerk of the District Court, a position she held for 20 years until her retirement in 1983. Following her retirement, she enjoyed camping and traveling with her husband until his death in May of 1997.
Elnora's passion was letter writing. She delighted in receiving and sending notes, cards and letters from friends, relatives and acquaintances all over the country. This passion continued until shortly before her death.
Elnora was a long-term member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as the historian for the Humboldt chapter for many years. She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt and a member of a circle there. She was a member of the Humboldt County Hospital Auxiliary, Humboldt County Republican party and a long-time member of the Iowa Public Employees Retirement Association.
On June 17, 2005, after many years spending winters in Colorado with her family, she decided to permanently relocate to the Centennial State. She moved to Longmont, Colorado where she was active in the First United Methodist Church and belonged to a circle there. She enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren grow and especially enjoyed preparing Sunday dinners for the family at her house.
Elnora is survived by her son, Tim and his wife Chris of Hygiene, Colorado, grandson Ryan Cunningham of Longmont, Colorado, two great-grandchildren, Meghan and Trevor Cunningham, brother Ralph Olson and his wife Donna of Humboldt, sister Marge Olson and her husband Robert of Bemidji, Minnesota, brother-in-law Roger Cunningham of Des Moines, Iowa, one aunt and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister.
