Ernest H. “Homer” Betz, the son of Ernest and Nellie (Otto) Betz, was born December 13, 1933 in Des Moines. He was raised on a farm outside of Grimes and graduated from Johnson High School in 1952. Following high school, Homer farmed with his dad until he entered the U. S. Armed Services in 1954. He served as an M. P. at Lompoc Prison in California until 1956. After his honorable discharge, Homer resumed farming with his dad. Once his father retired, Homer took over the family farm operation. In 1967, he moved his family to the Ottosen area where he farmed for 26 years. A stroke in 1994 forced his early retirement.
On June 07, 1959, Homer was united in marriage to Marilyn Malmin of Ottosen at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode. Marilyn was the love of his life. To this union, four sons were born; Daniel (Debbie) of Humboldt, David (Deb) of Clear Lake, Dean (Teresa) of Phoenix, AZ and Duane (Jennifer) of Altoona; 10 grandchildren, Jenna, Nathan, Drew, Devin, Dailey, Darby, Olivia, Claudia, Grace, and Eric; one great-granddaughter, Alexis.
Homer is survived by his brother John and sister Beverly, both of Ankeny, as well as several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Allen.
