Fern Andersen, 96, of Humboldt, passed away Jan. 25, 2012 at the South Care Center in Humboldt. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday (today) at the Mason Lindhart Funeral Home. Interment will be at Union Cemetery.
Fern Smith Andersen, the daughter of Sam and Cheistina Olsen, was born July 13, 1915 in Bradgate, Iowa. Fern married Jens Andersen on May 4, 1935 and they made their home in Bradgate and the Ottosen area until moving to Humboldt in 1944. Jens passed away in 1987.
Fern played basketball in high school and enjoyed playing basketball with her sons and she loved to follow the Hawkeyes. Fern was known for her baking and her specialties were sugar cookies, Danish kringle, and cinnamon bread. In her spare time she crocheted, went fishing, camping, had a large garden and played cribbage. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and was a member of the circle and the church sewing club.
Fern is survived by her children, Joe (Pat) Andersen of Lees Summitt, MO., Jim (Janis) Andersen of Humboldt, Denny (Dianne) Andersen of Humboldt, and Andy (Peggy) Andersen of Evans, CO.; grandchildren, Kirk Andersen, Kelli Andersen, Todd (Melanie) Andersen, Deb (Dave) Place, Darcy (Craig) Hickethier, David (Sheri) Andersen, Megan Andersen and Carissa Andersen; great grandchildren, Tyler Andersen, Nate Andersen, Sully Andersen, Sadie Andersen, Branden (Lacy) Place, Jacob (Justine) Place, Jessica Place, Cody Hickethier, Zachary Hickethier, Courtney Andersen, Torie Andersen; great-great-grandchildren, Kyra Place and Lilly Place; sisters, Isabelle Benjamin, Janet Bishey and brother Gene Olsen She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jens; son; Ronnie; granddaughter, Shana Andersen; great-granddaughter, Hope Andersen; brothers, Hank, Roy and Elmer Olsen.
