BODE – Garwin S. Sorlien, (“Bud”) 85, of Bode, passed away at the Algona Good Samaritan Care Unit on January 18, 2009. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2009 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode with Pastor Paul F. Breddin officiating. Burial will be in St. Olaf’s Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Bode.
Mr. Sorlien is survived by son Ron Sorlien and daughter-in-law Sue of Parker, CO; son Paul Sorlien and daughter-in-law Sue of Dakota City; and daughter Elaine Bernard of Gig Harbor, WA; grandchildren, Amy Feiman of Denver, CO; Ann Krebs of Boston, MA; Mindy, Kristin and Nathan Sorlien of Dakota City; and Eric Krenk of Gig Harbor, WA; four great-grandchildren, Sam and Max Feiman and Charlie and Cameron Krebs. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen, brother Don and sister Ima.
Garwin Stanley Sorlien, the son of Magnus and Mena Sorlien, was born October 21, 1923 in Bode. After graduation from Bode High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in December, 1943. He trained at Keesler Field, Biloxi, MS; Laughlin Field, Del Rio, TX; and Michigan State College, East Lansing, MI. He was also stationed in La Junta, CO and Roswell, NM until October, 1945. Bud was united in marriage to Helen Jarvis on February 7, 1948 at Brunswick, MN. They made their lifelong home north of Bode, where they farmed together until Helen’s death in 1996. Garwin continued to reside on the farm until moving to the Algona Good Samaritan Communities in 2006.
Mr. Sorlien was a life-long member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the Bode American Legion. He enjoyed golfing in his retirement and the uptown afternoon card games with friends.
