Georgia Jean McArthur was born June 21, 1926 in Independence, IA, the only child of George and Margaret (Brady) McArthur. Georgia attended school in Independence, and after graduating from high school at age 16, she enrolled at State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. She graduated in 1944 and began her teaching career in Fort Dodge. She later taught at Williams, IA, and then took a hiatus from teaching to raise her family. On September 1, 1949 she married Edward Thielen in Independence. The wedding was held on a Thursday because Georgia did not care for Saturday weddings. She returned to active teaching in 1968 at St. Mary’s School in Humboldt. She continued to teach there until her retirement in 1988. Following retirement she maintained her involvement with St. Mary’s working as a substitute teacher, tutor, and volunteer until 2002.
Georgia shared her love of handicrafts with her daughters. Most of the things Georgia liked to do involved young people. She taught school, worked at a Campfire summer camp, raised her children, and was on the Lakota Council of Girl Scouts of America. She loved to dance, read, and crochet. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a 500 club that met monthly for many years.
Those remaining to cherish the memory of Georgia include her daughters Kathleen (Steve) Rehmann of Fort Dodge, IA, Teresa Thielen of Des Moines, IA, Joann Thielen of Council Bluffs, IA, Marty Thorson of Council Bluffs, IA, and Lisa Thielen of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren Susan (Bill) Steckis of Omaha, NE, Sarah Rehmann of Portland, OR, and Hannah Thorson of Maquoketa, IA; great grandchildren are Ted and Sam Steckis. Preceding Georgia in death were her parents, husband Edward, and daughters Patricia and Elizabeth.
The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of services.
