Gordon E. VanGronigen, 94, of Dakota City passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020 at the Humboldt Care Center North.
He was born November 3, 1925 in Dakota City, the son of Richard and Hazel (Willey) VanGronigen. He graduated from Humboldt High School then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in the Pacific on the USS Fulton, a submarine, in WWII. Following his discharge, he returned to the Humboldt - Dakota City area where he met Elizabeth F. Lanning. They were united in marriage December 8, 1946. Gordon worked as a milk man for the Springvale Dairy, later for Concrete Products and then Corn Belt Power Company retiring in the mid 90’s. Gordon was a very active member of the Sathers-Odgaard VFW and American Legion. He provided military honors for more than 500 veteran funeral services. He enjoyed hunting, fishing in Canada with friends and doing crossword puzzles.
He is survived by his daughters Judy Tate of Flower Mound, Texas and Debbie (David) Fisser of Highland Village, Texas, his grandchildren Cory (Morgan) Tate, Jennie Fisser, Leah (Jon) Myer, Chad Dickert, Mitch Dickert, Josh Dickert and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth, son Rick, daughter Christy Moore, grandson Robby Tate and three sisters, Evelyn Davenport, Ruth Knight and Iola Maason.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at church. Burial with military honors by the Sathers-Odgaard VFW and American Legion at Indian Mound Cemetery Humboldt.
