Grace A. Hoag, 91, of Humboldt, passed away January 12, 2014 at the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Humboldt with the Rev. Marie Paterik officiating. Interment will be in Greene Cemetery, Greene, Iowa. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Grace Arcana Phillips, the daughter of Albert J. and Anna (Pascal) Phillips, was born January 9, 1923 on a farm in Pocahontas County, Iowa. She received her primary education and graduated from Pocahontas High School with the class of 1939. Grace continued her education by attending Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI). She began her teaching career in country schools in Pocahontas County and Laurens. In 1944, she was united in marriage to Victor Powers and to this union one daughter, Grace Ann, was born. The family made their home in Conrad, Iowa until Mr. Powers’ death in 1953. She and Grace Ann then moved to Humboldt where she began teaching at Taft Elementary. In 1972, Grace was united in marriage to Roland “Ron” Hoag. Grace continued her service to the Humboldt School district as a fourth grade teacher at Taft School until her retirement in 1985. Mr. Hoag passed away in 2000 and Grace continued to maintain her home in Humboldt.
Grace was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ. She was also a member of Eastern Star, sewing and bridge club, PEO, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She is survived by her brothers, Walter (Mary) Phillips of Pocahontas and Claude (Martha) Phillips of Pierson, Iowa; along with many nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, friends, and former students. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Victor Powers and Roland Hoag; daughter, Grace Ann Powers; her parents; and sisters, Margaret Rude, Ruth Miller, and Imogene Schoon.
