Gwendolyn (Cottington) Rolland, 93, of Bode, went home to be with the Lord on April 17, 2016. Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Jim Borlaug, will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode. Burial will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, Bode. Visitation is from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral home is assisting the family.
Gwendolyn Cottington, the daughter of Levi and Gertrude (Gienap) Cottington, was born July 7, 1922 on the family farm in Winnebago County, Iowa. In 1930, at the age of eight, she moved with her family to Compton, California, returning to Iowa in 1932. Gwen graduated from Bode High School in 1941. After graduation, she worked in the Bode Saveway Grocery Store. In 1942, she moved to Des Moines to work in the Ankeny Defense Plant, during World War II. On March 13, 1946, she was united in marriage to Keith (Bus) Rolland in the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Gwen worked at Eastman Studio until 1969 and then worked for W&H Coop as a bookkeeper until her retirement in 1984. She remained in her home until 2007. In 2012, she moved to Ames where she lived out her life.
Gwen was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Lydia Circle, Senior Citizens Card Club, Morning Bible Study, was active on the election board and blood drive, enjoyed morning coffee group, and wrote for the Bode News for several years.
Gwen is survived by her children, Cynthia Rosado of Sun City West, AZ and Kirk (Rebecca) Rolland of Ames; four grandchildren, Alison (Jeff) Higbee of Scottsdale, AZ, Paige (Matt) Johnson of Poulsbo, WA, Amy (Jason) Bell of Gilbert, and Matthew (Kelly) Rolland of Ankeny; and great grandchildren, Garrett and Grace Johnson, Caleb, Kadin, and Cooper Bell, and Lucy Rolland. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara (Don) Penquite of Ankeny, and Marilee (Jim) McAlphine of Oak Harbor, WA; 2 brothers, Bruce Cottington of Litchfield, MN and Rex Cottington of Phoenix, AZ; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith on 2003; son-in-law, Art Rosado in 2014; her parents; sister, Pauline Watson; brothers, Keith, Richard, and Levi Cottington; half sister, Gladys Siekmeier; and half brothers, Lyle, Donald, and Dwight Cottington.
Gwen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother; great-grandmother; and sister. She loved us all dearly. She loved Bode and was a good friend.
