Helen Mae Hosford, 86, of Humboldt, passed away August 8, 2015 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Gene Broughton officiating. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Helen Mae Smith, the daughter of Albert L. and Alice R. (Coffman) Smith, was born August 12, 1928 at Clarksville, Iowa. When Helen was two weeks old, the family moved to Livermore where her father owned and operated a meat market and grocery store. She attended Livermore schools and graduated in 1945. On June 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to John A. Hosford. To this union two children were born, Mary and Tony. Helen served as the organist at the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Livermore for many years. Mr. Hosford passed away on January 24, 1970. In 1973, she moved to Des Moines where she worked as an information operator for U.S. West Telephone. Following her retirement, Helen moved to Humboldt in 1994.
Helen was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt and served as a Hospice Volunteer. She is survived by her children, Mary (Kurt) Jorgensen of Prairie du Chien, WI, and Tony (Pam) Hosford of Humboldt; grandchildren, Daniel, Malinda, Erin, Nathan, and Laura; great grandson, Jayden Erie; sister, Lois Johnston of Des Moines; along with her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John A. Hosford; her brother, Burrell Smith; and her niece, Northa Chaudoin.
