Helen E. Olson, 91, of Humboldt, passed away Easter afternoon at the Humboldt Care Center North. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 19th, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Gene Broughton and Rev. Lissa Kahl officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is assisting the family.
Helen Elizabeth Mehl, the daughter of Lars G. and Olga (Olesen) Mehl, was born December 11, 1925 at Fonda, Iowa. She was raised and educated at Fonda and graduated from Fonda High School. Following her education, Helen moved to Manson where she was employed in the Bank. She then moved to Fort Dodge and became a bookkeeper for Tobin Meat Packing. On June 12, 1949, she was united in marriage to Harold Olson at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. The couple farmed together for many years in Grove and Beaver Townships. They retired from farming in 1994 and in 1997, they moved into Humboldt. Mr. Olson passed away in March of 2001 and Helen continued to maintain her home in Humboldt.
Helen became a resident of the Humboldt Care Center North in February of 2014. She passed away peacefully there on Easter afternoon. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cultivating her huge garden, and baking, especially good Norwegian cooking. She loved to sew and made many of her families clothing and enjoyed making rag rugs, knitting, and crocheting. In her later years, Helen enjoyed reading and creating intricate adult colorings. Her family will always remember her baking, especially her apple pie, lefse, cringle, and cookies.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Julie Olson of Humboldt; son, Kurt (Maria) Olson of Humboldt; grandchildren, Craig (Lolly) Olson of West Bend, Alissa (Mike) Williamson of Charlotte, NC, Adam (Megan) Olson of Loveland, CO, Brianne (Jason) Haukoos of Humboldt, and Brittany (Andy) Struecker of Whittemore; great grandchildren, Scarlett Olson, Julia Olson, Maddi Haukoos, Anna Struecker, Ryker Olson, Kaylee Haukoos, and two more on the way. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; sons, Kent and Bruce Olson; and sister, Carrie Amerson
