James A. "Jim" Johnson

James A. “Jim” Johnson, 83, of Humboldt, passed away at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames on Saturday, February 24, 2024.

Jim was born February 19, 1941, in Humboldt to Thomas and M. Elizabeth Johnson. He was raised and educated in Humboldt, graduating from high school in 1959. He excelled in athletics, which earned him an opportunity to play football at the University of South Dakota. Following his time at USD, he joined the National Guard, officiated football, and began his forty-six-year career at Corn Belt Power Cooperative, retiring in 2006.

It was in high school that Jim met Virginia “Ginny” Andersen. They were united in marriage on June 27, 1964. The couple made their home in Humboldt, and together, they centered their lives around loving and raising their three children.

Throughout the years, Jim valued the moments spent with family and friends. He was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling, and coffee group gatherings. He was an avid sports fan and loved following his favorite teams, especially the Iowa State Cyclones. His most rewarding pastime was attending his grandchildren's athletic events—he was a steadfast supporter and affectionately known as "Grandpa Jim" to not only his grandchildren but also to their teammates and friends.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Gary) Reed, Lauri (Wade) Hinners, and his son, Chris (Alecia) Johnson, all of Ames; his grandchildren, Christian Reed, Katie (Alex) Hansen, and Ajay Reed; Ben Hinners and Sarah Hinners; Isabelle Johnson, Ava Johnson, and Grant Johnson; and his brothers, Jerry (Jeanette) Johnson and Thomas (Janice) Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and M. Elizabeth, and wife, Virginia.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 30^th at Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the church.  The Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service of Humboldt is in charge of the arrangements.   www.masonlindhart.com
