Joan Kay Thompson, 79 of Bode, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona from lung cancer.
She was born April 24, 1941 in Wesley, Iowa to Elliott and Edna (Lickteig) Waldschmidt. Most of Joan’s childhood was spent on the family farm near Rodman, Iowa. Joan was the second of 9 children and as such she spent a great deal of time and energy watching over her younger siblings. Joan graduated in 1960 from Garrigan High School in Algona. She married Dr. Richard (Doc) Thompson on June 26, 1961, who preceded her in death in 2010. Doc and Joan lived in Bode from 1972 until July 2020.
Over the years Joan enjoyed raising two children, dancing, gardening, golfing and sewing. She was a great singer and served as a cantor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore. She participated in the Sweet Adelines barbershop chorus, was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and worked as a Mary Kay beauty consultant.
Joan is survived by her son James (Junehee Kwon) Thompson and their three children, Kyle Thompson, Faith Thompson and Grace Thompson all of Manhattan, Kansas and her daughter Ellen Thompson of Humboldt. She is also survived by her siblings Pat Keith, Rita (Ted) Jennings, John (Nancy) Waldschmidt, Bill (Mary) Waldschmidt, Bob (Marilyn) Waldschmidt, David (Dorie) Waldschmidt, Tom (Jeri) Waldschmidt and Virginia (David) Thom.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard (Doc) and her parents.
Visitation will be from 5:00 "to" 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14th at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service in Humboldt. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15th at St. Mary Catholic Church in Humboldt, facial coverings are required at church. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Whittemore. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Charities or St. Mary Church.
