John N. “Jack” Nilles, 96, of Humboldt, passed away on Monday morning, January 27, 2025 in the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 27, 1928, in Hamilton County, Iowa, the son of Charles and Lucy (Mariga) Nilles. He moved at an early age to the farm near Gilmore City and attended country school. Following the 8th grade Jack went home to assist his family with the farming operation. He was united in marriage to Verna Lee Wittman on September 10, 1951 in Humboldt. The couple made their home for a few years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he worked for a dairy. In the late 1950’s they returned to the family farm in Iowa. The couple moved to Humboldt in 2004. Jack was a very hard worker, providing for his family, loved to garden and was known for the produce he provided at the farmers market in Humboldt.
He is survived by his wife Verna of Humboldt, his children Polly Nilles, Pat (Mark) Laing and Doug Nilles all of Humboldt, his grandchildren Candy, Mike, Bob (Wendy), Stacy (Joe), Candi, Nick (Amber) and Megan, twenty great-grandchildren, his sisters Mary (Chet) Buckner of Branson, Missouri, Barb Sawyer of Humboldt, Clarine (Frank) Abeita of Los Lunas, New Mexico and Eva (Jack) Cafferty of Mauston, Wisconsin and his sister-in-law Joan Wittman of St. Paul, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Tom, brothers Don, Harold, Mel, Jim and Joe and his sisters, Dorothy, Marcie and Lucille.
