John Lewis Polley, the son of Cecil and Elizabeth “Lizzy” (Manly) Polley, was born January 2, 1934 near Vanceburg, Kentucky. He was raised on the family’s cattle, dairy, and tobacco farm at Manly Holler in Kentucky. At the age of 15, John enlisted into the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War stationed in England. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Sioux City, Iowa where he married Margaret Jansson. To this union three daughters and one son were born, Jonette, Pam, Teri, and Bill. John worked as a salesman for various companies for most of his life. A promotion in the late 1960’s brought the family to Humboldt where Margaret passed away in 1975. On July 1, 1977, he was united in marriage to LaRae Walker. The couple continued to maintain their home in Humboldt and John was baptized into the Oak Hill Baptist Church.
John, along with Art Petersen, established Hi-way Truck Equipment in Humboldt, which they owned and operated until their retirement. He was a member of Oak Hill Church. He enjoyed fishing on the Des Moines River and his family will remember him as an honest hard worker who could fix anything. John was especially proud of his grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife of 39 years, LaRae of Humboldt; children, Jonette (Tim) Dunn of Lindsborg, KS, Pam Polley of Bode, Teri (Stephen) Michea of Carlsbad, CA, Rick (Sue) Walker of Arlington, MN, Tricia (Scott) Greene of Humboldt, and Angee (Jerry) Heathman of Humboldt; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mildred (Billy) Simpson of Kentucky, Ruby (Frank) Arthurs of Kentucky, Doris (Jerry) Johnson of Tennessee, and Garneda (Bob) Chinn of Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, William Polley; brothers, Raymond and Herb; and sisters, Oleta and Louella.
