John Wickett,75 of Humboldt, passed away with his family by his side on Friday morning, January 27, 2023, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove.
He was born August 4, 1947, in Fort Dodge, the son of Bryce and Virginia (Kimzey) Wickett. He was raised in Lu Verne and graduated from LuVerne High School in 1965. He went on to Iowa State University where he played baseball for the Cyclones and graduated with a teaching degree. John was united in marriage to Nancy Brink on September 2, 1967, in Lu Verne.
In 1969 John accepted a teaching and coaching position in Humboldt. During his time, he taught several science classes, including biology and outdoor education, a favorite among students. John also coached multiple sports over the years. He was instrumental in starting the girls’ basketball, girl’s track and field, and softball programs. In addition, he coached football, boy’s track and field, baseball, basketball, and cross country. John touched the lives of countless Humboldt students and athletes for more than 30 years. He truly loved his Wildcat Family and took great pride in helping young adults achieve their dreams.
John loved spending time with family and friends. During the summers he enjoyed spending time at their cabin on the lake in northern Minnesota fishing, swimming, and boating. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering for the Cyclones, Braves, and Vikings. His real love was watching his children and grandchildren participate in activities. Countless hours were spent full of pride watching them compete in sports and perform on the stage. He was undoubtedly their biggest fan. John’s grandchildren were the absolute joy of his life.
He is survived by his wife Nancy of Humboldt, son Greg (Jani) Wickett of Humboldt, his daughter Renee (Chad) Langeness of West Des Moines and his grandchildren Mason, Ryder, Kolbe, Kade, Rylan and Raegan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill, and daughter-in-law Julie.
