John (Jack) W. Satern, 85, of Humboldt, passed away April 3, 2011 at the North Care Center in Humboldt. Visitation will be Fri. Apr. 8th from 4 – 7 pm at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Burial will be at a later date.
Jack was born on November 26th, 1925 in Jefferson, Iowa. At the young age of two he moved to the Mallard-West Bend area where he gained his education. He entered the Navy in 1944 receiving many medals after serving his country during WWII.
Jack returned to the Bode-Rutland area where he farmed. He was in the restaurant and café business for some time when he became involved with law enforcement. From there it led to many years of law enforcement of which he became sheriff of Calhoun County from 1978-1988. He then retired and moved to the Humboldt area. His hobby was known as “manual labor”.
Jack leaves behind children: Nadine (Jim) Nevills, John (Thola) Satern, Darrell (Debi) Satern, Eileen (Bob) Collins, Scott (Sandy) Satern, Marlene (Charlie) Crabb, Bonnie Wiggins and friend Lori, Melissa (Ben) Collins. He was a stepfather and foster father to many. He has several grand children and great-grand children. Jack loved the sound of the “JACKPOT” ringing up on a slot machine. He enjoyed and took great pride in a well-mowed yard and keeping things looking neat and tidy!
Those preceding him in death were his father, Henry; mother, Frances; sister, Nadeen; brother, Howard; sister, Elanor and grandson Clifford Troy Proffitt.
