Jon B. Reed, 57, former Humboldt Chief of Police, passed away March 18, 2012 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Walden Paige officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Peterson, Iowa. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Jon is survived by his wife, Gayle of Humboldt; sons, Brian (Amanda) Reed and Matthew Reed both of Rochester, Minnesota; and a grandson due next month. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Jo (Mike) Olthoff of Storm Lake; his brother, Doug (Dianna) Reed of Peterson; several nieces and nephews; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glen and Marjory Thompson of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie Reed; his father, Byron Reed; and his stepmother, Bonnie Reed.
Jon Brian Reed was born January 9, 1955 at Davenport, Iowa. In November of 1958, Jon was adopted by Byron and Marjorie (Rehnstrom) Reed and made his home with his permanent family on a farm near Peterson, Iowa. Jon received his education in the Sioux Valley School District and graduated from Linn Grove High School in 1973. Following his graduation, Jon attended Iowa State University where he met Gayle Thompson. The couple was united in marriage on June 27, 1976. Jon graduated from Iowa State University in 1977 with a degree in Political Science and Sociology. He then spent the next 10 years as an officer for the Spirit Lake Police Department. In 1987, Jon accepted the position of Chief of Police for the City of Humboldt.
Jon was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, the Humboldt Model A Club, the National Rifle Association, and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed Model A Ford’s, Model Railroading, and Wood Working.
