Kenneth L. Sawyer, 81, of Humboldt, passed away July 27, 2016 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Visitation with the family will be from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2016 in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m. in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Livermore.
Kenneth Lee Sawyer, the son of Marvin, Sr. and Gladys (Bjornson) Sawyer, was born February 12, 1935 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He graduated from Livermore High School in 1954 and graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1958. He was drafted by the United States Army in 1958 and served until 1960. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Ken started his teaching and coaching career that spanned 35 years with the last 28 years at Phillips Middle School in Fort Dodge.
Ken was united in marriage to Sharon Walton on July 17, 1965 and had four children. In addition to teaching, Ken also farmed and managed a de-tasseling crew. Ken was also employed by Sears for 13 years and worked for the Fort Dodge Country.
Ken enjoyed his family, fishing, hunting, farming, gardening, and was known for his tomatoes. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon of Humboldt; son, Scott (Julia) Sawyer of Whiting, IA; daughters, Kimberly (Randal) Metzger of Livermore, IA and Niki (Ryan) Rathert of Lantana, TX; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brothers, Richard (Kay) Sawyer of Renwick, IA, and Charles (Jeanne) Sawyer of Hollister, MO. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Sawyer; his parents; brothers, Marvin Jr., Gerald, and Merlin; and sisters, Beverly, Virginia, and Patricia.
