Leon D. “Butch” Kleiss, 90, of Humboldt, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and close friend. Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 17, 1929 in Tripoli, Iowa to Ewald and Helen (Piegors) Kleiss. He grew up and graduated from Tripoli and began farming. Butch married Georgena Segebarth on November 24, 1949. He farmed before becoming a farm equipment salesman. He also worked as a territory manager for Massey Ferguson. They moved to Humboldt in 1958. He went into business with Merf Johnsen, International Harvester Dealership and retired for the first time in 1987. Later he began selling Aladdin Pressure Washers until 1997, when he retired for the second time. He enjoyed delivering Jet-Co Trailers in the summer. He spent the winter months in Mission, Texas for 20 years.
Butch served on numerous committees at Faith United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, was Chamber of Commerce President, Methodist Men, IA-NE Farm Equipment Association, I-H Advisory Board (District and Regional) and was the President on the Hospital Board.
Butch loved fishing, golfing, and farming. He was an avid sports fan. He loved watching the Humboldt Wildcats where some of his family participated in many sports. He closely followed the Chicago Cubs and Iowa State Cyclones.
He is survived by his children, Sheryl (Thomas) Piskel of Spokane, Washington and Jeffrey (Christine) Kleiss of Humboldt, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Georgena, his parents and his sister Vada Ganske.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 20th from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. at Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 21st at 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. Burial will be held at a later date.
