Mabel N. Nygaard, 95, of Humboldt, formerly of Bode, passed away May 7, 2018 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Saturday, May 12, 2018 in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt with the Rev. Melissa Warren officiating. Visitation is from 9-10:30 am Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt.
Mabel is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Dennis) Carlson of Sandy, Utah; son, Edwin (Mary Ann) Nygaard of Algona; grandchildren, Neal (Melissa) Nygaard, Janna (Josh) Mann, Curt (Margie) Nygaard, and Darren Carlson; great grandchildren, Kelsi, Shelby, Thomas, Magnus “Gus”, and Liam; and her brother, Wendell Fortner of Humboldt. He was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Lloyd Fortner; and sister, Violet Fox.
Mabel N. Fortner, the daughter of Floyd and Lillian (Johnson) Fortner, was born May 15, 1922 at Clarion, Iowa. She was raised in Humboldt where she attended school. Following her education, Mabel worked as a housekeeper for area families and during World War II, worked for the war effort in an ammunitions factory in Des Moines.
On March 9, 1946, Mabel was united in marriage to Berdine Nygaard. The couple farmed together south of Livermore and in the LuVerne and Lake Mills areas until moving to their new home in Bode. Mr. Nygaard passed away in August of 2009 and Mabel made her home at Springvale Assisted Living in Humboldt.
Mabel was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church and was active in United Methodist Women. She enjoyed cooking and was known for her baking. She enjoyed yard work and gardening and was a talented seamstress.
