Marcella Vonderhaar, 98, of Humboldt passed away Wednesday March 26, 2014 at her home in Humboldt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday April 3, 2014 at 11 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt, Father James Tigges celebrating. Visitation for Mrs. Vonderhaar will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM with a Parish Rosary at 5 and Scripture Service at 7 in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home.

Marcella Killmar Vonderhaar was born January 17, 1916 in Spencer, Iowa to William and Emelia (Johnson) Killmar. She graduated from Spencer High School and attended Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines. She was employed at the Iowa State Legislature for the 1937 session. She worked in Des Moines until her marriage to William J. Vonderhaar on May 15, 1944.

Marcella was a volunteer at St. Mary’s School library for 17 years, was a member of the St. Mary’s Ladies’ Society and served on the St. Mary’s School Board for three years. She received the Iowa Governor’s Award in 1989, presented by then Governor Terry Branstad.

In addition to playing bridge and avid reading, the three things that define her life are Faith, Family and Friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Amelia, her husband, William, and brothers Jerry Killmar of Omaha and Jerome Killmar of Spencer.

She is survived by her six children, Barbara, William Jr. (wife, Deborah,) Anne, Tom (wife, Myra,) James (wife, Sharon,) and Michelle. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Connie Brandsgard, her grandchildren: Robert Powers, Robert Lucey, Joe Vonderhaar, Laura Vonderhaar, Michael Lucey, Elizabeth Lucey, Emily Piszczor, Ben Vonderhaar, Erich Vonderhaar, James Vonderhaar, Jr., and Tom Vonderhaar, along with her great-grandchildren, Jacob Lucey, Rebekah Lucey, Brian Piszczor, Matthew Piszczor, Emmet Lucey and Declan Lucey.
She leaves us these words of wisdom: “Good-bye and Celebrate!”
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the St. Mary’s School Tuition Fund.
The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
