Margaret “Marty” Miller, 81, of Humboldt, passed away September 13, 2008 at the Humboldt Care Center South. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be in Indian Mound Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation with the family is from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Mrs. Miller is survived by her husband, Damon of Humboldt; daughters, Pam (Bob) O’Donnell of Humboldt, and Karla Hamner of Salt Lake City, UT; grandchildren, Ryan (Colette) O’Donnell of Johnson City, TN, Rob (Kristy) O’Donnell of Gilmore City, April Hamner of St. Louis, MO, and Joshua “J.D.” Hamner of Denver, Co; great grandchildren, Aden and Reese O’Donnell; and sister, Della Forrett of Mesa, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Ronald Miller whose death occurred in Vietnam; brother, Elza “Bud” Yates; and sisters, Esther Reeves and Chloe Braun.
Margaret Yates, the daughter of Elza and Marie (Branson) Yates, was born April 17, 1927 at Remsen, Iowa. As a child, she made her home with her parents in various communities including, Fayette, Guthrie Center, and Panora. She graduated from Panora High School in 1944 and following her education was employed by Western Union In Des Moines. She was transferred with her job to Detroit then moved to Washington D.C. where she worked at the Pentagon in the Intelligence Department. It was there that she met Damon Miller and the couple was united in marriage on December 5, 1947 at a Methodist Church in Washington D.C. The Millers spent the next seven years in the Washington area working for the government until 1955 when they moved to Dakota City then Humboldt, Iowa where Marty worked in the ASCS Office. Damon’s position with Agrico took the family to Peoria, IL in 1967, Memphis, TN in 1968, Tulsa, OK in 1973, and Des Moines, IA in 1980. Following Damon’s retirement in 1985, the couple returned to Humboldt. The Millers enjoyed many winters spent in Texas.
Marty was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. She enjoyed dancing, especially square dancing, round dancing, and ballroom dancing. She also enjoyed, gardening, bird feeding and bird watching, cooking, bowling, and golfing. She especially cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
