Marie J. Olson, the daughter of Anton and Marie (Peterson) Olson, was born August 3, 1910 in Laksevaag Bergen, Norway. When Marie was eleven years old she, along with her family, immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island and the family first settled in Minnesota. When her father found work in road construction, the family moved about making their homes in Missouri and South Dakota before moving to Forest City, Iowa. It was there she met Clare Donahue and the couple was united in marriage on October 26, 1929. In 1935, Clare took a job as projectionist in the Humota Theater and the family moved to Humboldt where they remained the rest of their married lives. In Humboldt, Marie was employed by Clemenson’s Drug Store and the Humboldt Hotel gift shop. Clare and Marie also owned and operated the Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store and a laundromat and car wash in Humboldt.
Mr. Donahue passed away in 1980 and Marie continued to maintain her home until moving to Arlington Place in Pocahontas in 2000. In 2006, she became a resident of the Rolfe Care Center and in June of 2011, she moved to the West Bend Care Center. She passed away there on the morning of October 31, 2012 at the age of 102.
Marie was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and E.L.C.W. She was also a member of Rebecca’s, the Good Neighbor Club, and was an active member of the Senior Citizens where she enjoyed playing cards. She and Clare enjoyed traveling, which she continued after his death taking many bus tours. She also enjoyed reading. Marie felt blessed with good health and never complained.
