Marion Louise Atherton passed away at Agrace hospice with her family by her side on April 26, 2019 in Madison, Wisconsin. She was 74.
Marion was born on July 16, 1944 to Russel Kramer and Louise (Craig). She was united in marriage to Brian C. Atherton until his death in 1999. Marion grew up in Melrose, Wisconsin on a small dairy farm. She attended Wisconsin State University La Crosse and graduated in 1966. Her first teaching contract was in Elmbrook, Wisconsin where she met Brian Atherton. They married April 3, 1971. In the fall of 1976 the family moved to Humboldt, Iowa where she raised her two children and resumed her teaching career. She received her master’s in education from Iowa State University in 1991 and served as a Special Education teacher for Humboldt Community School District for 25 years.
Soon after her retirement she moved to Madison, Wisconsin to be closer to her children and granddaughter, Ava. Ava was her joy and one of her most proud roles was that of “Grandma A”.
Marion was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, crossword puzzle genius, lover of all things cats and cows and will forever be crowned with the best of the best in baking her famous ranger cookies. She loved to socialize participating in bridge club and water aerobics. She was a very giving person and it was rare in her nature to put herself first.
She is survived by her two children, Amy of Middleton, WI. and Andrew (Cathy) of Fitchburg, WI., grandchild Ava, sister Jean (Jim) Markfelder and brother Les (Barb) Kramer, Brother in law Jeff (Jane) Atherton, Brother in law Roger (Pat) Atherton and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at the Mason-Lindhardt Funeral Home in Humboldt. Visitation from 11:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. and Memorial Service at 12:00 noon. A Celebration of life will be held at Rustix Restaurant at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Agrace Hospice Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
