Marvin Wergeland

Marvin L. Wergeland, 88, of Hardy, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, in the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital.

Marvin LeRoy Wergeland, the son of Miller and Bernice (Reed) Wergeland was born on June 10, 1935, in Hardy, Iowa.  He attended school in the Renwick School District, graduating with the class of 1953.  He was united in marriage to Dolores D. Johnson on June 20, 1954 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hardy.  The couple made their home on the family farm where they raised their children Cynthia, Kim and Chris.

The thing Marvin loved doing most was farming.  In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with the family, fishing at the cabin in Minnesota, and traveling with Dolores in winters during retirement.  Marvin also loved watching his favorite team, the Iowa Hawkeyes, playing football or basketball.  He was a member of a bowling league and a neighborhood 500 card club.  He also enjoyed playing cards with his family and reading his farming magazines and joke books.  He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling jokes. 

Marvin served as a member and Board President of the Boone Valley Community School District Board of Education for many years, as a member and President of the Hardy Cooperative Elevator Board, as a member of the Hardy Trinity Lutheran Church Council, as a member of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Board and as a member of the Humboldt County Compensation Board.

Marvin is survived by his children Cindy (Jeff) Pattison of Muscatine, Kim (Conley) Nelson of Algona, and Chris (Natalie) Wergeland of Hardy; grandchildren:  Jennifer (Mike Van Atter) Pattison, Anna Pattison, Mark (Amy) Nelson, Kara (Dan) Garman, Emilee Wergeland, Johnathon Wergeland, and Ashlee Wergeland; great grandchildren:  Claire, Ellis, Alaina, Hayden, Nile, Amara, and Jordyn; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dolores, and two sisters:  Evon Baessler and Donna White.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 19th at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Friday.  Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Hardy.  The Mason-Lindhart Funeral & Cremation Service is in charge of the arrangements.  www.masonlindhart.com
