Melvin David Andersen, the son of Jesse and Mabel (Nelson) Andersen, was born October 24, 1939 on the family farm in Humboldt County.  Following his education, Mel worked as a truck driver with his brother in the family’s quarry business.  He was then employed for many years in the road construction business in both Iowa and Colorado.  Mel then accepted the position of Assistant Superintendent for the City of Humboldt Street Department until his retirement in 2001.  On March 23, 2002, he was united in marriage to Deb Logue at the United Methodist Church in Boone.  Mel and Deb made their home on the north edge of Humboldt all of their married lives.

Mel loved his work with heavy equipment and in his retirement enjoyed working with his Ford Tractor, antique automobiles, and motorcycles.  Mel was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing.   In recent years Mel took great pleasure in his job as bus driver serving special needs children, detasslers, and especially transporting the Humboldt Wildcat Baseball Team.  Mel was very active in AA and through this did a lot of good for others as well as himself.
