Merland Glen Cody, the son of Walter and Mae (Kincade) Cody, was born June 3, 1918 at Humboldt, Iowa. He received his education at Humboldt and was employed in DeGroote's Grocery Store. He was united in marriage to Floy Cooper on June 27, 1940 and Merland went to work for Supreme Bread during the war. The couple then moved to Des Moines where he managed a Ben Franklin Store until 1944 when he and Floy along with Harold DeGroote purchased the Corner Store at LuVerne. In January of 1951, the couple moved to Humboldt where they purchased Foodland, which became Cody’s Market and Old House of Values. He owned and operated that until 1970 when he sold the business to Fareway and purchased a grocery in Nevada for a short time. He then entered the real estate business, working with Smith Realty until his retirement in 1980.
Merland was member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He was also a 50-year member of the Humboldt Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, and Eastern Star. Merland served as past president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Real Estate board in Humboldt. He was also a member of the Antique Car Club and enjoyed collecting antique clocks.
