Michael Berkhimer, 64, of Humboldt, passed away November 2, 2017 at his home in Humboldt. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Union Cemetery, Humboldt, followed by visitation until 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt.
Michael Berkhimer, the son of John and Marietta (Morgan) Berkhimer, was born August 18, 1953 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was raised and educated at Humboldt and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1971. He attended the University of Iowa and worked at Humboldt Concrete Products during the summer. Following his education, Mike returned home and went to work for Frit Industries and Russ Meyer Construction. He was also employed by UBC in Humboldt.
Mike made his home on the families acreage near Sheldon Park where he enjoyed caring for his cats. He was a caring person who loved all animals and nature, and had a deep concern for the environment. He was a voracious reader with an incredible memory who had a particular interest in books of non-fiction and architecture. He was also a kind soul who enjoyed his solitude and especially found reward in helping his older acquaintances.
In his younger days, Mike was an accomplished tennis and squash player who was invited to participate on the Iowa Tennis team and played in many area tournaments. Growing up, Mike was a great pitcher who had a deadly curve ball and was an excellent shot with his .22. He took a particular interest in rowing, following the sport and spending hours on his rowing machine. He loved music, especially Neil Diamond, CCR, and B.B. King and was known to play it loudly.
Mike is survived by his father, John Berkhimer of Humboldt; his sister, Beth Sullivan of Edina, MN; uncle, Keith Berkhimer of Humboldt; and his many cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marietta Berkhimer in 2013.
