Michael Wayne Smith

November 15, 1947 — June 8, 2017

Michael Wayne Smith of Dakota City passed away peacefully June 8, 2017 at the Paula Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge with his family at his side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday June 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt, Father Brian Danner celebrating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Interment will be a Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Humboldt. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is assisting the family.
Michael Wayne Smith was born November 15, 1947 in Great Bend, Kansas. He was the youngest of four children born to John Frederick “Fred” Smith and Frieda Morris Smith. Mike grew up in Great Bend and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1966. Shortly after graduating he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served in the USAF for four years attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant and honing his skills as an aircraft mechanic. On October 3, 1970 Mike married Peggy Jean Finney at Saint John’s Church in Gilmore City. The couple lived in Rapid City, South Dakota for six months, and then moved to Gilmore City. Mike and Peggy welcomed four children to their union; Angela, Michael Todd, Amy, and Brian. Mike worked at Agrico, Chantland’s, and Hog Slat, from where he retired several years ago. Mike and Peggy were also the first managers of the Gilmore City Café.
Mike enjoyed golf, woodworking projects and classic autos-especially his 1955 Chevy. He loved playing games with his children and grandchildren and attending their activities and ball games. Mike truly loved his children and grandchildren and was proud of all of them.
Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife Peggy of Dakota City, children Angela (James) Coburn of Humboldt, Michael Todd “Hoda” (Kristy) Smith of Humboldt, Amy Smith of Dakota City, and Brian (Nikkii) Smith of Humboldt; grandchildren Marty, Zayne, Tretten, Alleyah, Parker, and Molly; sisters Grace Bell and Lois Pierson both of Great Bend, Kansas; brother-in-laws Tim (Denise) Smith, Gilmore City, Terry(Darlene) Smith, Humboldt, sister-in-law, Judy Finney, Council Bluffs and numerous nieces and nephews. Mike’s parents and sister Judy Stambaugh preceded him in death.
Mike was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and was our best friend.
