Nola Fletcher McElhinney, the daughter of John and Flora (Inman) McElhinney, was born March 21, 1921 at Sydney, Australia. She attended the Dullidge Hill Girls High School where she graduated valedictorian of her class. After high school she attended and graduated from the Metropolitan Business College in Sydney. After her schooling she was employed by Lloyds of London, then the Statistical Bureau of New South Wales Government Railways. She volunteered for the Red Cross during WWII and it was there that she met Harlyn Stoebe who was serving with the U.S. Air Force in the South Pacific. The two were united in marriage on March 9, 1945 in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia at St. John’s Congregational Church. Mrs. Stoebe arrived in the United States in July of 1946 where she was met by her husband in San Francisco. The couple made their home in Humboldt where Mr. Stoebe practiced law and Nola maintained the family home, occasionally helping at the law office. Mr. Stoebe passed away on May 31, 1986 and Nola continued to maintain her home in Humboldt. In July of this year she took up residence with her son Kurt John and his family and most recently the Hospice Home in Fort Dodge where she passed away.
Mrs. Stoebe was involved in various church circles and organizations, she was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, and also served on the North Central Mental Health Board. She enjoyed oil painting, crocheting, cooking, her pet cat, and taking care of her family. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Humboldt County and the American Cancer Association.
