Norma L. Bertsch was born in Swanders, Ohio, the first of three children born to John Godfrey “Fred” Bertsch and Minnie (Kratt) Bertsch. She and her family moved to Anna, Ohio where Norma received her education. After graduating from Anna High School, Norma traveled throughout Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana for several years. Part of that time she accompanied her aunt and uncle in a Vaudeville show. She met John Doyle in Mount Pleasant, MI, and on December 23, 1942 was united in marriage with him at Fort Campbell, KY in a double ceremony with John’s brother. Two children were born to this union; a son, Galen and a daughter, Moira. The couple lived in Carteret, NJ and Clinton, Iowa before moving to Humboldt in 1955. Norma raised her family. She was an active member of the Humboldt Country Club and helped with planning to build the current clubhouse, although she was not an avid golfer. John passed away the day before Thanksgiving, 1987. Norma continued to live in her home in Humboldt until, because of health problems, she had to move to Humboldt Care Center North and then to Long Term Care in 2013.
Norma was a voracious reader. She enjoyed many literary genres, but her favorites were historical book having to do with the American West and Native Americans. Norma also liked listening to music, particularly classical.
Those surviving Norma include her son, Galen, of Bloomington, MN; daughter Moira Kellenberger of Algona; grandchildren Bryan Kellenberger of Tolley, ND; and John Kellenberger of Taipei, Taiwan; great-grandchildren Dakotah, Jentz, and Ryal Kellenberg and Caleb Omdahl.
