Norman G. Nelson, 81, of Dakota City, passed away July 13, 2016 at the Humboldt Care Center North. Visitation with the family will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, July 18 followed by funeral services at 7 p.m. in the chapel of the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Military Rites will be provided by Adams American Legion Post 119 and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240. Interment will take place in Union Cemetery, Humboldt.
Norman Gene Nelson was born in Humboldt County to Sam and Mary (Larsen) Nelson on September 15, 1934. He attended schools in Humboldt County and was drafted into the United States Army in 1954. His basic training was in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and spent time serving in Japan. He was married to Bonnie Brownfield and to this union two children were born, Brian Gene and Brenda Kay. They were later divorced. He spent his entire life living in Humboldt County.
Norman was very proud to be a veteran. He enjoyed playing cards at the VFW, fishing, and coin collecting. He worked as a truck driver for Marso Excavating and was employed by Yacht Club Trailers and Dodgen Industries.
Norman is survived by his son, Brian (Lisa) Nelson of Gilmore City; daughter, Brenda (Tom) Mersch of Gilmore City; step-daughter, Connie (Reed) Dowling of Des Moines; grandchildren, Amanda (Marcus) Stump, Christopher Mersch, Jeremy (Kelsey) Mersch, Aaron Mersch, Jessica (Jered) Eveland, and Jonathon Nelson. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Keegan, Nevaeh, Isabel, Alexander, Marcus, Amyiah, and Malaki ; sister, Marilyn (Harold) Wingerson of Fort Dodge; and brother, Kenneth (Phyllis) Nelson of Humboldt. He was preceded in death by his parents; step daughter, Cindy Grause; and brothers and sisters, Marvin Nelson, Elnora Nelson, Russell Nelson, Verena McDowell, Arlene Sherman, Sam Nelson, Jr. (who died in a Korean prisoner of war camp), Harley Madsen, Bernice Kleve, and Merlin Nelson.
