Opal Alberta Schmanke, 83, of Humboldt, passed away November 4, 2012 at Trinity Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be 10:00 am Thursday, November 8th at Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt with burial at Union Cemetery in Humboldt. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Opal was born January 27, 1929 to Albert and Lula Riley at her parents’ home in Adams County Iowa. She graduated from Corning High School and in 1961 she was united in marriage to Don Schmanke and they made their home in Eagle Grove until they moved to Humboldt when they started Design Homes Construction. She worked at Design Homes until her husband passed away and then went to work at Farm and Home (now Shoppers Supply) and worked there for 26 years as a bookkeeper, retiring in 2007. She was an avid golfer and past secretary of the Iowa women’s golf association. Opal was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed crocheting and loved the outdoors, camping and fishing.
Opal is survived by her son Ed (Cyndy) Schmanke and daughter Cyndee Schmanke; grandchildren Corey (Wendy) Soule, Don Schmanke, Josh Stubbs, Matt Stubbs; great-grandchildren, Jazmine Soule, Jayde Soule, Taylor Soule; brother, Keith Riley; special nieces, Sharon Stelzer, Sandra Foster and Suzan Kimnatz. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don Schmanke; brother, Don Riley.
