Rachel Heynis was born May 18, 1969 in Libertyville, Illinois, the second of two children born to Raymond and LoAnn (Mitsven) Heynis. She spent the first ten years of her life in nearby Round Lake. Her family moved to Humboldt in 1979, and Rachel received her diploma from Humboldt High School in 1987. She attended Buena Vista College (now University), but did not complete her degree due to medical issues. She later attended Iowa Central Community College studying education and radio broadcasting. Rachel worked when she was able for several employers including West Fork Services. She spent most of her adult life living in Humboldt.
Rachel enjoyed playing darts, reading, and crafts such as scrapbooking. She loved animals and was particularly fond of cats and gerbils. Rachel’s family and friends remember her great sense of humor and her intense commitment to things in which she took an interest. She was a compassionate person as evidenced by her willingness to be a tissue donor with the Iowa Donor Network.
Those remaining to cherish her memory include her parents Raymond Heynis, Jr. of Janesville, WI and LoAnn Heynis of Humboldt, brother Raymond Heynis III of Humboldt, and her long-time companion and caregiver Andy Shelton. She was preceded in death by her grandparents.
