Rae Jean Morgan (85), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on Monday, July 29th, 2024, at the Long-Term Care Unit of the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. She was everything a wife, mother, grandmother, and sister should be. She loved and was loved fiercely. She was kind, generous, brave, and strong. There is no doubt in our minds that she is celebrating in Heaven in the arms of our loving Father and Jesus.
Rae Jean was born on April 4, 1939, to Roger and Evelyn (Lyons) Mead. The oldest of three children, Rae Jean was born and raised in Correctionville, Iowa. She was quite social, had many friends and participated in many extracurricular activities including cheerleading. She met the love of her life, James William Morgan, while she was eighth grade. She graduated from Correctionville, Iowa, in 1957 and earned her two-year teaching degree from Wayne State in Nebraska. Jim and Rae Jean were married on June 7th, 1959, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this summer. After they married, Rae Jean began her teaching career. She began teaching in Baxter, Iowa, then moved to Gilbert and Ida Grove before settling in Gilmore City for the duration of her teaching career. Jim and Rae Jean moved to Humboldt in the summer of 1970 and happily lived there for 54 years. Rae Jean retired from the Gilmore City-Bradgate school system in 1999 after helping countless children with learning disabilities in the special education resource room. Rae Jean was heavily involved in the Humboldt United Methodist Church teaching Sunday School, participating in United Methodist Women, and volunteering for many church functions by helping in person and/or donating her delicious desserts. Rae Jean was a voracious reader carrying her Kindle everywhere she went. She enjoyed many activities, especially sewing, baking, and swimming. She and her mother ran the Correctionville swimming pool together when Rae Jean was in high school. Her most cherished activity, however, was taking care of her husband, daughters, and grandchildren. She and Jim traveled far and wide to ensure that they created a strong relationship with their beloved grandchildren.
Rae Jean is survived by her husband, James, of Humboldt; daughters, Michelle Lea Morgan of West Des Moines and Danielle Lynn (Bill) Pothoff of Austin, TX; grandchildren Aiden Vedder of West Des Moines, Morgan Pothoff (Mathew Zinke) of Austin, TX, Will Pothoff of Austin, TX, Matthew Pothoff of Austin, TX, and Joseph Pothoff of Austin, TX; her brothers Barry (Marilyn) Mead of Unionville, MO, and Richard (Connie) Mead of Tyler, TX; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Rae Jean was preceded in death by her parents Roger and Evelyn Mead and Jim’s parents, Robert and Nellie Morgan.
