Ray A. Kunert, 83, of Humboldt, passed away April 5, 2018 at Paula Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Burial with military rites by Adams American Legion Post 119 and Sathers-Odgaard VFW Post 5240 will be in Union Cemetery, Humboldt. Visitation is from 5-7 pm Monday at the church.
Ray Alton Kunert, the son of Emil and Daisy (Chaffee) Kunert, was born October 15, 1934 on the family farm Northeast of Humboldt. He attended Grove Township #9 country school and graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1953.
Ray was drafted into the United States Army, serving from 1957-1959. He received his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, his advanced training at Fort Hood, Texas and served with the 4th Armored Division in Ulm Germany until his honorable discharge.
In 1960, Ray was united in marriage to Diane Laing and the couple made their home in Humboldt. Ray worked for farmer Jim Youngclaus and ran the feed grinder for Glen Lenning before going to work for Ken Perrin in his service station. Ray then accepted the position of custodian at Taft School where he served for 35 years. He and Diane also served as custodians at the Humboldt Trust and Savings Bank and Bank Iowa for 41 years. For many years, Ray also helped his wife with her daycare in their home.
Ray was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he served as trustee and financial secretary. He is survived by his wife, Diane of Humboldt and his son, Randy (Kathryn) Kunert of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and special uncle, Walt (Pearl) Kunert of Minnesota.
