Robert (Bob) Howard Benjamin, eldest child of Chris and Emelia (Naeve) Benjamin, was born August 18, 1921, on a farm north of Bradgate, Iowa. He entered his heavenly home January 3, 2012, after a brief stay at the Hospice Home in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, surrounded by his loved ones.

His memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7, 10:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Gilmore City. Visitation will be at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt, on Friday, January 6, from 4-7 p.m.

Bob is survived by his wife of 68 years, Isabelle (Olsen) Benjamin of Humboldt.  To this union was born 8 children:   Roberta Hope (Robert) Boore of Bettendorf, Roderick Howard (Nancy) of Benson, MN, Rebecca Helene (Ron) Juelfs of Ames, Royal Hugh (Elaine) of Parker, CO, Rolland Hoyt of Englewood, FL, Raymon Howell (Kathy) of Rutland, Rachael Holly (Jake) Bullock of Clarksville, TN, Reginald Henry (Mae) of Bradgate; 21 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren. Bob is survived by his brother Ted  (Lillian) of Humboldt and was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dennis (Wanda), infant brother Richard, and son Raymon.

Bob was raised on the family farm and attended school in Bradgate where he graduated in 1938 with the love of his life, Isabelle Olsen. He served in the US Army during World War II as a Military Policeman with the 14th Armored Division which was nicknamed “the Liberators”. This division was instrumental in liberating P.O.W. camps across Germany.

Prior to his overseas deployment, he married Isabelle Olsen on June 18, 1943, during his first leave home.  Following his honorable discharge, they returned to the Bradgate area where they farmed until moving to Springvale Independent Living, Humboldt, in 2010.

Bob enjoyed being involved in many community activities which included: Gilmore City-Bradgate school board, 4-H leader, Humboldt County Soil Conservation District Commissioner, Co-op Board, Bradgate V.F.W., Gilmore City American Legion, and the 14th Armored Division Alumni Association.
Bob was a member of First Lutheran Church where he was baptized on October 15, 1923, and confirmed on March 21, 1937. He served many years on the church council and various other roles.  He also enjoyed hosting Bible Studies with his wife in their home.

Bob loved life and loved people but most of all he loved having family around him. Favorite activities included fishing, playing cards-especially cribbage, parades, fairs, making jerky, garage sales, gardening, reading, traveling, shopping at Goodwill and attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Bob was blessed with a long, happy and productive life. Thanks be to God!
