Roy D. Nygaard, 94, of Humboldt, passed away September 24, 2017 at the Humboldt Care Center South. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Graveside funeral services for the family will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Union Cemetery, Humboldt with the Rev. Melissa Warren officiating.
Roy David Nygaard, the son of Christian and Lizzie (Roalstad) Nygaard, was born August 9, 1923 at Titonka, Iowa. He was raised and educated at LuVerne and graduated from LuVerne High School with the class of 1941. He played basketball for Iowa State University until he was drafted into the United States Army. He served as a mountain climbing instructor for the Army in Colorado during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and was united in marriage to Leota Jean Sawyer on January 11, 1948 at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt. The couple farmed together north of Humboldt for many years until moving to Humboldt in 1990. Mrs. Nygaard passed away in September of 1995. Roy continued to remain active in the farming operations by helping his son, Todd until the age of 91.
Roy was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Humboldt. In his earlier years, he enjoyed square dancing with Leota and playing pinochle and 500 with his card club. He was a member of the Humboldt Lions club and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa State Cyclones fan. He was able to continue his love of golfing at Spring Valley Golf Couse until well into his 80’s.
Mr. Nygaard is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Nygaard and her husband, Fred Gulden, of Ames, Lori Meyer and her husband, Arlo Meyer, of Ames; son, Todd Nygaard of Livermore; his special friend and long time companion, Pat Barrick of Humboldt; grandsons, Alex and Max Gulden; sister, Hazel Van Voorhis of Tulsa, OK; and sister-in-law, Mabel Nygaard of Humboldt. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leota; brothers, Charles, Luther, and Berdine Nygaard; and sisters, Mabel Nelson and Katherine Smith.
