Ruby McBurney, daughter of Garnie C. Hood and Florine (Collicott) Hood, was born at home in Kossuth County, Iowa, March 31, 1930. In 1939 she with her parents and older brother moved to Rutland, where two more siblings were born. She graduated from Rutland High School in 1947. Following her graduation she attended secretarial school in Omaha. She returned to Humboldt and worked as a bookkeeper at a branch office of Borden Ice Cream Company. She was united in marriage to Thomas James McBurney on March 19, 1950. To this marriage four sons were born, John Thomas, Mark Alan, Robert James & Richard Lee. She started working as secretary/treasurer at Faith United Methodist Church in 1965 and continued in that position until her retirement in 1994. In the mid-eighties she and Tom started a business, Grandpa’s Toys, and enjoyed traveling throughout the Midwest to Toy Shows. That business was sold in 2010 and they retired for the final time. Ruby and Tom moved to an apartment at Springvale in 2015, where she continued to live until her death. Ruby did many things in addition to raising four boys and working at the church. When her boys were young, she purchased a loom and wove rugs in her home; she and Tom square-danced; she was a wonderful baker and enjoyed baking with her grandchildren. In recent years, she shared the products of her baking with her friends at Springvale. She was an avid reader, and in later life she participated in a writing class at Springvale, documenting much of her family’s history as well as writing fictional pieces. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.
