Shirley Joanne (Shelgren) Nielsen, 78, of Humboldt, passed away to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Hamilton County Hospital. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Oak Hill Baptist Church. Visitation will be prior to the services at the church. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home of Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.
Shirley Joanne Nielsen was the daughter of Edwin and Ethel Shelgren. She was born in Gilmore City, August 4th 1931. She lived on a farm in Gilmore City and attended school in Gilmore City until the school burnt down and then went to Rolfe schools for three years where she graduated in 1949. She was the Drum Majorette for Rolfe High School and helped the school establish a marching band. Her senior year she taught the fourth grade for 3 months.
Shirley was united in marriage to Earl Nielsen on June 3, 1951. The couple made their home on a farm in Gilmore City. She was a 4-H leader for 14 years, and taught Sunday school at the Baptist Church in Gilmore City. She was associated with Oak Hill Baptist Church in Humboldt and was very active in the Mary Circle. She was a stay at home mother and farmer’s wife. She enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and watching them play sports. She also enjoyed watching the TV game show, The Price Is Right.
Survivors include her husband Earl of Humboldt; Children Larry (Susan) Nielsen of Gilmore City; Marvin (Monie) Nielsen of Renwick; Vicky (Steve) Deering of Northfield, MN; Rick (Jane) Nielsen of Gilmore City; Shelly (Steve) Umstead of Humboldt; and Curt Nielsen of Gilmore City. Grandchildren, Jamie DeWinter, Brian Benjamin, Jessica Harklau, Ashley Kirchhoff, Barry Benjamin, Clayton Nielsen, Chlorissa Nielsen, Melissa Nielsen, Ryan Nielsen, Cody Nielsen, Chris Nielsen, Jenna Umstead, CeeJay Nielsen, and Luke Nielsen. Great Grandchildren, Reese DeWinter, Allison Benjamin, Skylar Nielsen, Darby DeWinter, Houston Nielsen, and Carter Nielsen. Brothers include David (Shirley) Shelgren of Springfield OR; Edward (Judy) Shelgren of Humboldt. Sisters include Patricia Daughenbaugh of Seal Beach CA; Esther Sinek of Rolfe, and Nancy (Jim) Martin of Rolfe. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Edwin and Ethel Shelgren; her brother Gordon Shelgren; and sisters, Edna DeVine, and Janet Grell.
